The Faculty of Agriculture, Tanta University, is taking tangible steps toward sustainable development and agricultural innovation under the patronage of Prof. Essawy Qassem Mahmoud, Faculty Dean, and Prof. Adel Helal, Vice Dean for Community Service and Environmental Development, and under the distinguished academic supervision of Prof. Amgad El-Gammal, Vice Dean for Postgraduate Studies and Research and a pioneer in rooftop and soilless farming.

   The first activities of the faculty’s Advanced Training Course on Soilless Agriculture and Rooftop Farming were held on Saturday, August 29, 2026. They featured an exceptional field visit to the modern agricultural projects in the Orabi area near Cairo. The visit was led by Prof. Amgad El-Gammal, Professor of Crop Science and Vice Dean for Postgraduate Studies and Research, and attended by Asst. Prof. Mohamed Hussein, Assistant Professor, Department of Genetics, Faculty of Agriculture.

Details of the Practical Field Visit

First Stop: Advanced Commercial Systems

   Students received a comprehensive hands-on explanation of the agricultural systems covered in the course. This included precise preparation of nutrient solutions, the installation of hydroponic systems, biological pest and insect control methods, as well as an introduction to vertical and horizontal systems, the modern A-Shape system, and the requirements for seedling production.

Second Stop: Dutch Bucket System

   The group then visited a specialized nearby farm to explore the practical application of the Dutch Bucket system and learn how to make highly efficient use of available space to produce high-quality crops.

Third Stop: Innovation and Agritourism

   The field visit concluded with a visit to a unique farm that combines agricultural production with the concept of agritourism. Students observed aeroponic farming systems using innovative towers, along with various models of smart farming systems. These visits help bridge the gap between academic learning and direct practical application while preparing the faculty’s students and graduates for the modern labor market and emerging projects in food security and sustainable agriculture.

   The faculty extends its sincere thanks and appreciation to Prof. Amgad El-Gammal for his tireless efforts and continued support for scientific research and students. Appreciation is also extended to the farm of Engr. Mohamed Zahran and Aqua Green for Agricultural Investment Farm (Engr. Abdel Moaty).
